Styx is the first musical act to ever have four consecutive triple platinum albums, and remain one of the most popular musical acts in history. The group originally formed in the Chicago, Illinois, area in 1961 as "The Tradewinds". This earliest line-up of the group included vocalist, pianist, keyboardist, and accordion player Dennis DeYoung, and a rhythm section comprising brothers Chuck and John Panozzo on bass and drums, respectively. Changing their name briefly to "TW4", the band added guitarists/vocalists James "J.Y." Young and John Curulewski. The band members decided to choose a new name when they signed to Wooden Nickel Records; several suggestions were made and, says DeYoung, Styx was chosen because it was "the only one that none of us hated." Guitarist Tommy Shaw joined the group in 1975 following the departure of Curelewski.

Great White Hope Lyrics

Styx

Written by james young
Lead vocals by james young
When I was a young man, I had to kick and scratch and claw
Now its like top gun in the old west, everybody wants me to draw
If I had known it would be like this I might have given it a second thought
But if someone had told me to give it up, its a line that I wouldnt have bought
Look at me
Im the great white hope
Cant you see
Im up against the ropes
Dont you know
Its so hard to cope
When you feel
Like the great white hope
Now youve paid your money youre sitting in your ringside seat
And I know that some of you out there, might wanna see the champ get beat
If I had known it would be like this I might have given it a second thought
But real life sure isnt like school, theres some lessons that just cant be taught
Look at me
Im the great white hope
Cant you see
Im up against the ropes
Dont you know
Its so hard to cope
When you feel
Like the great white hope
